Cobweb and lace are often compared with each other: both are light, airy, openwork; both are the result of the high skill of nature and man. And both of these subjects immediately come to mind when you get to know the work of Shane Waltener. He weaves delicate, elaborate laces and arranges them in houses or in nature, like a spider's web.
The sphere of interests of Londoner Shane Waltner is extremely diverse: here weaving, sculpture, sugar crafts, and gardening. But projects related to knitting are still a little special: after all, it is not every day that you meet a man who knows how to knit. However, Shane, although he studied sewing and textile processes at the Brussels La Cambre Institute, rarely creates his installations alone: most often he resorts to the help of recognized craftswomen who own one or another knitting technique.
According to Shane, he is fascinated by two things in knitting: firstly, the beauty of the things created, and secondly, the social dimension of this craft - while knitting, people often tell stories, share opinions and memories. Because of the second aspect, the author often creates interactive installations where viewers can take part in knitting and at the same time take part in a conversation.
“Depicted in the context of contemporary art, knitting to some extent restores the balance between 'high' and 'low' art, between art and craft,” the author is convinced. In addition, Shane believes that knitting is often underestimated, considering it to be a purely female occupation. The other extreme is the commercialization of this type of activity. The author believes that as a man who creates art with a crochet and knitting needle, he can make the viewer rethink his vision of knitting.

It's just incomprehensible. Therefore, it still remains a great mystery: how it was possible in the 17th century to create marble works with such jewelry, when the main instrument was sculptor

The magic lace of Tamara Yuf's drawn fairy tales: Why Soviet collectors were chasing them
