After so many publications about paper masterpieces, take at least the recent sculptures by Carlos Meira, or the mini-origami Mui-Ling Teh, it seems that it is no longer possible to surprise us with paper artwork. But paper sculptures Francine Levinson (Francene J. Levinson), which will be discussed, are still amazing. Francine Levinson draws inspiration from the art of origami, and calls paper a unique material for realizing her ideas, since this material is as fragile as freedom, and as strong as the desire for this very freedom. It's the same story with her sculptures: they are both her strength and her weakness. She loves them very much, but sometimes, when inspiration is depleted and what was conceived does not work out, she cannot stand it.
Francine Levinson makes her sculptures either from rectangular clippings from glossy magazines, or from the most ordinary notes for notes: pink, yellow, green, white … By cutting, bending and folding these leaves, the number of which often exceeds two or three thousand, the artist creates something airy, layered and tender, like a cream cake or pastry.
In addition to sculptures from paper, the artist creates others - from alabaster, plastic and stone. A portfolio of these works can be viewed on the website of Francene J. Levinson.
