In childhood, many of us dreamed of learning to fly and over and over again jumped as high as possible, hoping that another attempt would be successful. As adults, we realized that this is impossible. But American photographer Conan Thai is sure that nothing is impossible, and we cannot fly only because we are used to walking on the ground and no longer dream of the sky.
Series “Attempts To Fly; And the attempts to fall”(“Attempts to fly and attempts to fall”) depicts people who are trying to go beyond their own capabilities and do something extremely atypical for everyday monotonous life. As Konan Tai says, this idea is based on his unwillingness to be “a cog in the clockwork of passing life,” but at the same time, the author notes, the older we get, the more ordinary and ritual actions we perform. This is simply necessary in order to simplify our activities and minimize the number of errors. “But in doing so, we neglect roads that deviate from or cross our intended direction,” Konan Tai continues to speculate.
Although every photograph captures a person's attempt to fly, it is unlikely in this case that the flight should be taken literally. It would be more correct to say that the flight for the author is the personification of everything unusual, unconventional, it is an attempt to go against the rules, to challenge circumstances, to perform an unexpected act. “As a child, we were not afraid to look up and fill our fantasies with magic. Why don't adults do the same? - the author asks.
By the way, in the title of his photo series, Konan Tai mentions not only flights, but also falls. This means that an attempt to swim against the current may not always end well. And surprises, with the help of which you can diversify a boring life, can be not only joyful, but also very unpleasant. And yet the author is sure that this is better than living according to the rules and according to the schedule. “Do non-standard things,” Konan Tai urges us. "And then, perhaps, one of us will really learn to fly."
