Nature is full of unsolved mysteries, and man always strives to get closer to them, at least a little. "What should I love if not a riddle?" - with this quote from the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, our hero, American Jonathan Beer, begins a story about his work. The author of the riddle himself simply adores, and takes the most difficult of them for study. But how correct the answers he found turn out to be is up to you to judge.
Jonathan Beer makes a special emphasis in his work on attempts to understand the foggy realm of human thinking: “In my paintings, I create a cosmological system from my personal mental universe - describing the mental processes and actions associated with cognition and memory. During my work, I become a cartographer and naturalist, exploring and documenting quasi-architectural levels of consciousness. I am interested in the intricate connections between the outside and the inside; between the built, architectural space and the internal, biological space”.
At the same time, Jonathan Beer notes that his work is not devoid of some tension that arises from the use of his images as a tool for visualizing concepts that are too abstract for illustration. And here we cannot but agree with him, because the artist draws things that we hardly ever know about how they really look: consciousness, thinking, memory …
Jonathan Beer is interested in natural sciences, art history and theory, literature and philosophy, and believes that knowledge in these areas enriches his artistic forms and broadens his intellectual horizons. “I believe that as an artist I have a responsibility to represent and support the ideas of a better world,” says the author, who draws inspiration from the works of Franz Ackerman, William Kentridge, Richard Serra, Roberto Matt, Albert Bierstadt, Julie Meretu.
Jonathan Beer was born in 1988 in New Orleans and currently lives and works in New York.
