In a new series by the French photographer Franck Bohbot there are no characters. Viewers can only see images of empty pools, devoid of signs of human presence. Unusual and mesmerizing interiors are in the spotlight, while curved roofs and spacious hallways symbolize a bygone era.
There are so many things that can prevent people from enjoying the grandeur of the building they are in. A screaming toddler who is afraid to go into the water, an old woman in a bathing cap accidentally nudging people floating by with her elbow, a crowd of noisy schoolchildren jumping from the side - all this certainly does not conjure up a picture of peaceful bathing. French photographer Franck Bohbot is doing everything he can with his camera to counter the chaos that has ensued. His serene photographs of public pools in those rare lonely moments are the nostalgic calm before the storm. In such a peaceful atmosphere, even the smell of bleach seems quite attractive.
Photos from Franck Bohbot are an example of how a seemingly ordinary space can look aesthetically pleasing from different angles. Seamless lines, high ceilings, mirrored surfaces and rectangular shapes convey the symmetry and charm of the pools in all their glory. The juxtaposition of blue variations with shades of white and yellow energizes photographs.
