The other day, an auction was supposed to take place, the most important lot at which was the painting by Leonardo da Vinci "The Savior of the World". The canvas was called “the greatest discovery of the XXI century”, “Male Mona Lisa”. The story of her discovery can be called almost detective.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World) around 1500. At first, it belonged to King Charles I of England, as evidenced by the entries in the inventory books of that time. Then the traces of the canvas were lost. The painting was discovered only in the middle of the twentieth century, but art critics unanimously declared that it was not da Vinci's original, but the work of one of his students. The manner in which Jesus' face and hair were depicted did not match Leonardo's technique.

Because of this, at Christie's, this painting went under the hammer for only £ 45. In 2004, Robert Simon, an expert and connoisseur of antique paintings, became its new owner. It was he who began to have doubts about the "Savior of the world."

Restorer Dianne Dwyer Modestini recalls the trepidation with which in 2007 she removed the top layers of paint in the picture:.

"Savior of the World" is the last painting by Da Vinci, which is in a private, not a museum collection. The current owner of the painting, Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, plans to bail out at least $ 100 million for it.

More recently, the art world has been shocked by another piece of news. A painting by Rubens was discovered, which was considered lost for 400 years. The canvas was under everyone's nose.
