People's Artist of the USSR Lyudmila Chursina is called one of the most beautiful actresses of the twentieth century, while she never used her beauty as a means to achieve goals. Pride and love of freedom did not allow them to agree to deals with their own conscience. She refused to shoot in Hollywood and left the son of General Secretary Yuri Andropov. Although today Chursina continues to act in films and remains a successful actress, she travels on the subway and lives in a one-room apartment, which she talks about without hesitation.
Lyudmila Chursina was born a month after the start of the Great Patriotic War. Her childhood was spent in evacuation, in Stalinabad (Dushanbe). Lyudmila dreamed of becoming the chairman of a collective farm, decided to enter a technical university, and as a result ended up taking exams at the Shchukin Theater School. I went to the company for a friend, and, unlike her, entered. Before classes in "Pike" she washed the floors in the classrooms - she had to earn a living on her own.
Chursina later admitted: “It only seems to us that we are choosing. There is a purpose for everything. I never dreamed of being an actress. She was long, awkward, notorious because of her height and large legs. And His Majesty's chance gave such a wonderful profession. I am grateful to her, she allowed so many amazing states to experience, travel so much, get to know interesting people."
She began acting in films while still a student at the Shchukin School, and played her first serious role at the age of 23, in 1964. In the film "The Don Tale" her partner was Yevgeny Leonov, whom the obstinate young actress advised to acquire a footrest in response to his remark: "Well, how am I going to act with such a big dildo?" This role brought her not only popularity, but also personal happiness: she soon married the director of this picture, Vladimir Fetin. They lived together for 15 years and broke up due to her husband's addiction to alcohol.
In the late 1960s - early 1970s. Lyudmila Chursina played in several films that have become iconic for her. "Gloomy River" (1968), "Zhuravushka" (1968), "Lyubov Yarovaya" (1970), "Olesya" (1970) brought her all-Union fame and love of the audience. For the film "Crane" Chursina received the Grand Prix at the San Sebastiano Film Festival.
At the same time, the actress received an offer from Hollywood: she was promised a 3-year contract and shooting in 15 films. Of course, in those days it was more than problematic to go to work abroad, but Chursina did not even try: she did not know the language and did not see the prospects for creative development in Hollywood. “Where I was born, I came in handy there,” said the actress and later did not regret her decision. In addition, she was constantly busy in theatrical performances. On the stage of the Central Academic Theater of the Soviet Army, she continues to play to this day.
In 1983, the actress remarried, to the oceanologist Vladimir Petrovsky, but two years later the couple divorced. Chursina's third husband was the son of Secretary General Yuri Andropov, an ambassador to Greece at special assignments. But this marriage did not last long - the freedom-loving nature of the actress did not allow her to put up with other people's rules, sacrificing her own interests.
“These people, their wives have a special world, I do not envy them. Yes, maybe everything is not bad materially, but this is not what we live for. I am not very tired of this order. I prefer to travel when I can, to meet with whom I want and to talk without looking back,”the actress explained her decision. In order not to be obliged to anyone, Chursina left with one suitcase.
The actress never got married anymore and never gave birth to children. “It’s useless to regret,” she says. After all, no matter what happened, she remained true to herself. Chursina admits that she never felt lonely - she took care of her mother, younger sister and nephews, lived hundreds of destinies on stage and in the cinema and did not allow herself to lead an idle lifestyle, thanks to which she retained her youth.
Few Soviet film actresses looked like Hollywood stars. The only thing that could compete with Chursina was Elina Bystritskaya: 15 photographs of "the most beautiful woman of the outgoing century"
