Iya Savvina did not have an acting education, and she never dreamed of connecting her life with theater and cinema. But she had such an incredible talent that crowds of people gathered even for student performances of Moscow State University with her participation. Later, she nevertheless changed her profession and very quickly became famous. One of the most stellar works of the actress was the role of Asya Klyachina in the film by Andrei Konchalovsky, but the next proposal to shoot the same director ended in a huge scandal.
Complex nature
Iya Savvina was seriously going to become a journalist. She entered Moscow State University, and at the same time began to study at the Student Theater of Moscow State University. His fame in those years was truly colossal, performances were staged by famous actors and directors. When they showed "Such Love", directed by Rolan Bykov, where the main roles were played by Iya Savvina and her first husband, a real sold-out was observed in the student theater.
Alexei Batalov, who had been approved by that time for the role of Dmitry Gurov in the film "The Lady with the Dog", also attended this performance. The actor was completely amazed at the talent and charm of a simple student at Moscow State University. He recommended the director Joseph Kheifits to invite Iya Savvin to the picture, because the search for an actress for the role of Anna Sergeevna had been going on for a long time and to no avail. It did not take long to persuade an employee of the Detgiz publishing house at that time, and after the success of the film, Ie Savvin was accepted into the troupe of the Mossovet Theater and was immediately introduced to the main role in the production of Nora.
At the same time, Iya Savvina herself was always embarrassed when they praised her acting skills, although it never occurred to anyone to flatter her. She was actually incredibly talented. Many colleagues spoke about the very complex nature of the actress, but she was simply distinguished by her particular exactingness towards herself and her colleagues in the profession, could not justify a careless attitude to work. She herself played in full force and expected the same from others.
Surprisingly, the young non-professional actress was very friendly with Lyubov Orlova and Faina Ranevskaya, and each of them, as you know, had a difficult character. On the day of Iya Savvina's premiere in The Burrow, she received a basket of flowers from Lyubov Orlova, who had played the main role in this performance before Savvina. Iya Savvina always wore a signet ring donated by Faina Georgievna on her hand, and at home she had a watercolor landscape painted by Ranevskaya.
Iya Savvina had a huge number of friends, she loved to arrange holidays, invariably became the soul of any company. The actress never suffered from star fever, did not try to demonstrate her superiority to anyone, but she invariably showed concern and participation in relation to those whom she loved.
Movie scandal
But the actress could be overly harsh when it came to work. And even more so, she never, under any circumstances, compromised her own principles. And she was quite capable of throwing a grandiose scandal.
Back in 1967, Iya Savvina starred in the lead role in Andrei Konchalovsky's film "The Story of Asya Klyachina, Who Loved, But Did Not Marry." The film was not released for wide distribution, but went “on the shelf” for a long 20 years, but the actress forever imbued with the deepest respect for the director. And with warmth she recalled the time spent on the set of the "forbidden film". A surprisingly warm atmosphere has developed in the creative group.
Only three actors were involved in the film: Iya Savvina, Lyubov Sokolova and Alexander Surin. All other images were embodied on the screen by ordinary residents of the village of Kadnitsy, Gorky Region, where the shooting took place. But at the same time, communication was easy, and, most importantly, very sincere. The film was banned, but it was still very dear to the actress.
She has repeatedly confessed: Andrei Konchalovsky completely charmed her with his non-standard directorial approach, a special look at what seemed to be familiar things, and also with a deep mind and incredible charisma. Twenty years after filming, the film was released and was an incredible success. Andrei Konchalovsky received the Nika Prize for him, and the picture also earned the USSR State Prize.
Then the director decided, on the wave of success, to shoot a sequel to the film entitled "Ryaba Chicken". The film was supposed to be shot with the same participants as 20 years ago, but the script for it was written not by Yuri Klepikov, the author of The History of Asya Klyachina, but by Konchalovsky himself in collaboration with Viktor Merezhko.
Having previously agreed to the role, Iya Savvina began to get acquainted with the script, after which she threw a real scandal for Konchalovsky and Merezhko. The actress was extremely outraged by the script. According to the director's idea, the action of the picture unfolds 30 years after the events described in the first part.
But the popular and phantasmagoric manner of narration did not find a response in the soul of the actress. Moreover, she considered the script just an insult not only for herself, but for the entire Russian people. The actress, in a rather harsh manner, told the director everything she thought, and informed him that she would not take any part in this derogatory action for a Russian person.
As a result, "Ryaba Chicken" came out with Inna Churikova in the title role, and Iya Savvina herself, it seems, did not even want to watch it. She read the script quite enough; she was generally a very sincere person. She did not waste her time on trifles, she knew how to highlight the main thing. And she also knew how to be friends and be faithful. People, profession, own principles. And to their homeland, no matter how pretentious it may sound.
Iya Savvina, People's Artist of the USSR, had a lot of trials. The fragile and feminine actress, according to the recollections of friends, colleagues and acquaintances, had the character of a warrior, steadfastly endured all the hardships of life.
