Selknam - one of the Indian peoples who could not resist the onslaught of civilization. The number of these ancient nomads in the middle of the 19th century was several thousand people, and already in 1974 the last purebred villagers died. The Indians were ruthlessly exterminated with the support of the Argentine government: presenting the head of a Selknam, two hands or two ears, one could receive a reward of 1 pound sterling.
The mysterious Selknam people inhabited the eastern and northern parts of Tierra del Fuego, were engaged in gathering and hunting, fishing and collecting shellfish. Birds and guanaco lamas were hunted with a bow and arrows, on wooden boats, moving along the coast, they looked for sea prey.
For the villagers, a communal clan system was characteristic, by the beginning of the 1920s, 39 localized clans were part of the villagers, the account of kinship was carried out on the paternal side. According to ancient beliefs, the Selkns descended from a common mythical ancestor Temaukel. In his honor sacrifices were made, appeals were made to him in case of illness. It was believed that after death the soul certainly meets with the deity in the afterlife.
Selknam families were small, and polygamy was rare. The genus numbered from 40 to 120 people, had its own hunting grounds. Each clan had an elder, his title was not hereditary.
The main holiday in the life of the Selknam is the sacred Klokten ceremony, which was held in winter, when the entire community gathered together. It was a kind of initiation rite for men who, under the guidance of a shaman, appeared before women in a specific form - in conical masks made of bark, and their bodies were painted with geometric patterns. In everyday life, the Selknam wore clothes made of guanaco, otter or fox skins with fur outside, fur hats and leather shoes reminiscent of modern moccasins.
Unfortunately, the culture of the village people is almost completely lost today. However, representatives of other indigenous peoples still live in America, and it is interesting to learn about them in their own way. Take a look at the portraits modern American Indians and see for yourself!

How the ban on incest spawned European civilization with its individualism
An international group of scholars decided to see how the incest taboo worked after the consolidation of the Christian church in Europe on society. Their conclusion is that it seems that modern civilization has developed largely due to the ban on marriage between relatives. Although, of course, this was not the only factor, but the effect on the processes in society was strong
How Soviet soldiers survived, who were carried into the ocean for 49 days, and How they were met in the USA and the USSR after they were rescued
In the early spring of 1960, the crew of the American aircraft carrier Kearsarge discovered a small barge in the middle of the ocean. On board were four emaciated Soviet soldiers. They survived by feeding on leather belts, tarpaulin boots and industrial water. But even after 49 days of extreme drift, the soldiers told the American sailors who found them something like this: help us only with fuel and food, and we will get home ourselves
Why are the ancient artifacts of the aborigines of Australia, which were created 46,000 years ago, were destroyed today?
Man is known to be the biggest enemy of nature. No natural disaster will cause as much harm as we inflict on our Earth and its inhabitants. People are especially unprincipled when it comes to money. For example, a mining company, which is in a hurry to make a quick profit, can destroy a unique historical landmark of the most ancient earthly civilization. Meanwhile, this sacred place is over 46,000 years old
Eastern European Sushi: Sushi with an Eastern European twist. Art project of the studio Clinic 212
The crazy popularity of such Asian fast food as sushi, rolls and other maki has gradually led to the fact that restaurants (such as) Japanese cuisine are opened in almost every village, not to mention megacities or cultural and historical centers. Moreover, those dishes that are called real Japanese cuisine on the menu are in fact an imitation, a parody of what the Japanese call "rolls". However, our traditional dishes have certainly undergone no less changes in Asian restaurants
How dynastic marriages destroyed one of the most powerful families in European history
Despite the fact that the dynastic power of the Habsburgs has its roots in the Middle Ages, it nevertheless reached its full bloom in the 16th and 17th centuries. As the Spanish and Austrian lineages of the House of Habsburg dominated Europe, the cousins married their first cousins, and the uncles married their nieces, thereby trying to maintain the purity of the bloodline. But instead of healthy offspring, the family, which became famous throughout the world for royal inbreeding, received infertility and
