They say, about venerable and pious listeners, that there is a certain city on the edge of the world, called Jaisalmer, built in time immemorial by the glorious Indian Maharaja Jaisal. And only one wealth, given by Allah, was among the venerable inhabitants of the city - the great desert, which began right at the Jaisalmer gates. But he is wise who can turn sand into gold; and since the inhabitants of Jaisal were as wise as they were pious, they figured out every year to arrange a bright and magnificent holiday for the benefit of themselves and people - a great Desert Festival.
The millennial Jaisalmer, with a population of 58,000, is one of the most beautiful cities in India. It is located in the historical region of Rajasthan, in the very east of a huge country, on the border with the Arab world - and therefore in its architecture Arab-Persian luxury is mixed with the distinctive Indian style. To the east of Jaisalmer lies the Desert National Park.
Unlike many other festivals in India, the Jaisalmer Desert Festival bears a clear imprint of Arab, Muslim influences. The festival program includes traditional camel races, polo, concert programs with oriental dances and music, turban competition, and much more. Of particular note is the amusing competition of the barbel: as you might guess, the one whose mustache is longer and more luxuriant wins. After a victory, a proud barbel usually does not miss an opportunity to order a painting with his own image.
In general, for lovers of paintings and photography, the Desert Festival is just paradise. The panoramas that can be caught here in the lens, even now insert into the film like "Prince of Persia" - the ancient temples and palaces of Jaisalmer look so beautiful and unusual against the background of dunes and palm trees. Especially under the light of a huge tropical moon. And if there are not enough photos, you can order a painting - there are a lot of local artists around.
This colorful festival takes place in February - and sometimes Russian tourists even get there, although it is quite far from the famous Goa to Jaisalmer. And nevertheless, lovers of Arabic fairy tales overcome this path - obviously, it's worth it.
