The works of this author are often mistaken for oil paintings, or digital paintings. And they refuse to take their word for it when they are told that in front of them are drawings made with a pen. Ordinary ballpoint pen Bic Cristal, which has been written by schoolchildren, teachers and students since 1950. Add 100 hours of painstaking work to each of them - and voila, a picture James Robert Mylne ready. The unrealistically complex and time-consuming process of creating such a picture takes away a lot of strength from the author, both physical and moral. Talking about his work, the English artist says that he repeatedly intended to quit this occupation, because one wrong move - and many hours of work are ruined, you need to start all over again. However, for many years of hard training and self-education, and for 15 years now, amazing pictures drawn only with a ballpoint pen delight and inspire all fans of his work and connoisseurs of the unusual in contemporary art.
At exhibitions of paintings by James Robert Mylne there are always many curious people who want not only to look at wonderful photorealistic portraits of people and animals, to admire landscapes that resemble digital painting, but also to touch them and almost smell them to make sure that they are not deceived … The fact is, the artist smiles, that few of them imagine that chiaroscuro, textures and other details of drawings can be done in several ways, in addition to traditional shading. Sometimes you have to wait until the first layer of ink is dry to apply the next one, and sometimes he purposely smears on fresh shading to achieve the desired effect. The artist describes all these tricks, subtleties and tricks on his website, because he remembers how difficult it was for him at the beginning of his career, when there was still no Internet, and only a few modern painters drew with a pen as the main tool. By the way, we have already written about one of them, an artist named Samuel Silva, in whose palette there are eight multi-colored ballpoint pens.
The latest series of paintings by James Robert Mylne is called Vintage Vogue and consists of vintage portraits of such celebrities as Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Sean Connery as James Bond, Steve McQueen, and other representatives of culture and art of the past. For these paintings, the artist used not only his favorite Bic ballpoint pen, but also spray paint to tint the finished drawings "for vintage". You can see how such pictures are born on the author's video:

Ballpoint pen drawings by Anna Emilia Laitinen
Drawings drawn with a simple ballpoint pen, for me personally, quite often evoked associations with school sketches on the last sheet of a notebook, where many students killed the passing time during a boring lesson. Works by Shane McAdams, or a duet between an artist and a ballpoint pen
