It is customary to say about turbulent times that people live like on a powder keg or like on a volcano. However, few people know that living on a real active volcano is very comfortable. Proof of this is the Japanese village Aogashima (Tokyo Prefecture), located on the eponymous volcanic island … It is home to about 200 people, the island boasts picturesque nature and mild climate.
Due to its unusual tectonic structure, Aogashima Island resembles the scenery for a sci-fi movie. It was formed as a result of the eruption of several underwater volcanoes, so today it resembles a fancy inverted pudding on a plate: in addition to the main crater, there is also a caldera on the island, a depression with steep walls. Looking at the photographs of this natural phenomenon, it is hard to believe that there are still places on the planet that are practically untouched by human civilization.
It is noteworthy that the island has been "inhabited" for many centuries, but human activity has hardly touched the unique nature. The last major volcanic eruption was recorded at the end of the 18th century, when about 140 local residents died. True, after half a century, people returned here again, today the few inhabitants of the island are located on its small part. Houses, a department store and a helipad are built here.
The shores of Aogashima Island are practically inaccessible, there is only one bay where small ships can dock. Not many tourists come here, although a vacation on the volcano can become really unforgettable. Among the most popular entertainment are hiking around the island, diving in the emerald waters of the Philippine Sea, visiting hot volcanic springs, as well as a unique geothermal sauna. Lovers of extraordinary experiences even have the opportunity to cook food in the volcanic heat. By the way, such an unconventional way of cooking is practiced not only in Japan. On our website Kulturologiya.ru we have already written about the unusual Spanish restaurant El Diablo, where barbecues are fried on an active volcano.

It is very difficult to identify the most ancient of them, but nevertheless such attempts are constantly being made. The oldest residential buildings in the world are very attractive, because they are silent witnesses of a century or even a thousand years of history
Earthly Paradise in the Middle of the Indian Ocean: How the Island of Socotra looks like a scenery for a fairy tale
Socotra is a Yemeni-owned island located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. It is one of the most isolated islands of continental (non-volcanic) origin. Many millions of years ago, it broke away from the mainland, and this event preserved the unique nature of the island. Its flora and fauna turned out to be, as it were, "conserved" from any external influence. The island does not look like a fragment of the earth's land, but like a fragment of another planet. Everything seen there often does not resemble at all

Inhabited island: an Irish monastery away from the hustle and bustle of the world
Among the proverbs collected by V. Dahl, there is one that reflects the full depth of religious feeling: "God is not in logs, but in ribs." A striking example of a real ascetic existence is a monastery located on Skellig Michael Island, 15 km off the coast of Ireland. There are no "logs" and the usual church luxury - only stone cells in which Christian monks lived far from the bustle of the world
A volcano in its own living room. Explosive installation The Other Volcano
Would you like to tame … a volcano? Bring him into the house, carefully put him in the middle of the room, and live side by side with him, not for a minute, however, not forgetting that at any moment this dormant mountain can wake up and explode with fireworks of lights? It sounds scary, but in fact, not everything is as creepy as it might initially seem. The volcano called "The Other Volcano" is an explosive, but safe installation for the people around. The idea for the project belongs to the French designer Nelly Ben Ha
