It is customary to say about turbulent times that people live like on a powder keg or like on a volcano. However, few people know that living on a real active volcano is very comfortable. Proof of this is the Japanese village Aogashima (Tokyo Prefecture), located on the eponymous volcanic island … It is home to about 200 people, the island boasts picturesque nature and mild climate.

Due to its unusual tectonic structure, Aogashima Island resembles the scenery for a sci-fi movie. It was formed as a result of the eruption of several underwater volcanoes, so today it resembles a fancy inverted pudding on a plate: in addition to the main crater, there is also a caldera on the island, a depression with steep walls. Looking at the photographs of this natural phenomenon, it is hard to believe that there are still places on the planet that are practically untouched by human civilization.

It is noteworthy that the island has been "inhabited" for many centuries, but human activity has hardly touched the unique nature. The last major volcanic eruption was recorded at the end of the 18th century, when about 140 local residents died. True, after half a century, people returned here again, today the few inhabitants of the island are located on its small part. Houses, a department store and a helipad are built here.

The shores of Aogashima Island are practically inaccessible, there is only one bay where small ships can dock. Not many tourists come here, although a vacation on the volcano can become really unforgettable. Among the most popular entertainment are hiking around the island, diving in the emerald waters of the Philippine Sea, visiting hot volcanic springs, as well as a unique geothermal sauna. Lovers of extraordinary experiences even have the opportunity to cook food in the volcanic heat. By the way, such an unconventional way of cooking is practiced not only in Japan. On our website Kulturologiya.ru we have already written about the unusual Spanish restaurant El Diablo, where barbecues are fried on an active volcano.
