Larung Gar Buddhist Institute, also known as Serthar, is located in Garze Prefecture in the Tibetan mountains at an altitude of 4000 meters. It was founded in 1980 by the lama Jigme Phuntsok, then on the site of today's settlement there was a deserted valley. Now Larung Gar is the world's largest center for the study of Buddhism, home to more than 40,000 monks, nuns and students.
Larung Gar is struck by the huge number of wooden houses that nestle throughout the valley. In the center of the settlement is a huge wall separating the houses of monks and nuns, as men and women live separately. The only thing they have in common is the assembly hall of the monastery.
Surprisingly, half of all who came to study at Larung Gar are women. Most of the women's Buddhist monasteries located in Tibet accept only a limited number of female students, while Larung Gar is open to anyone who is sincerely seeking knowledge. Another distinction of the academy is that, although most of the lectures here are in Tibetan, there are separate classes in Chinese for students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
The path to Larung Gar is not easy: to get to the institute, you need to cover a 650 km path from the nearest city of Chengdu (it usually takes about 13-15 hours by car). Despite the fact that the interest of tourists to visit this place is great, Larung Gar is often closed to foreigners.
