It rained for four years, eleven months and two days … Yes, it’s about the city of Macondo from the legendary novel by Marquez. Although watercolors by renowned American artist John Salminen There is little in common with Aureliano Buendía's "non-drying" homeland. Looking at the wet streets of San Francisco, Chicago, Paris or even Shanghai, captured by the brush of a skilled watercolorist, one gets the impression that the "Salminen" rain has neither end nor edge.
The rain outside the window is a real expanse for sophisticated natures. It's amazing how differently each artist reacts to drops drumming on the windowsill. Gregory Thielker takes his viewer by the hand and leads him to the rain-drenched window, Evgeny Gavlin wanders the deserted alleys, and Mark Allante does allow the "rainy" colors to flow down the canvas. John Salminen's cityscapes are completely different. The master's canvases have an amazing property: despite the fact that the paintings are made in a realistic manner, they are imbued with a subtle poetic feeling. A dynamic composition, a masterful play of light, painstakingly and almost intuitively recreated the slightest shades of flowers … All this enchants the viewer, transfers them to a completely different world, where rain is falling, and huge puddles under their feet, but in this world there is no hint of wet despair, rather the feeling when “the soul, having snuffled, suddenly got wet,” as Shevchuk sang joyfully.
In order to accurately recreate the smallest details, John Salminen first captures what he saw with a camera, and after that he recreates the picture with paints. The artist's skill is highly appreciated today: his paintings are included in the collections of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, he is a member of organizations such as the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, etc., as well as the Jiangsu Watercolor Research Institute in China …
Over the course of his creative career, he has won more than two hundred times the winner of various competitions, including the AWS Gold Medal and the Silver Star in the National Watercolor Society. Now John is happy to help young talents, participates in competitions already as a judge, writes books about painting and willingly shares his secrets, publishing author's educational discs. Of course, in the works of John Salminen it is not always rainy, he also has sunny paintings, but the master almost never changes the theme of the urban landscape. More of the artist's work can be seen on his personal website.
