American photographer Holly Andres is the author of the beautiful and at the same time frightening series of works "Sparrow Lane", in which she metaphorically and figuratively talks about the growing up of girls.
Andres was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. She received her BA in Fine Arts from Montana State University in 2002 and her MA in 2004 from Portland State University. In addition, she attended lectures at the Seattle Art Institute for two years. Having received an art education, Andres, however, found her true vocation in photography and cinema.
Her photographs tell about the nature of memory, women's introspection and the difficulties that many faced in childhood. Usually in her photographs there is some obvious object, which, however, is not the main one - in his works Andres assigns a significant place to a special disturbing subtext. The Sparrow Lane series of photographs is an original story about very young girls on the verge of growing up. The viewer is offered a costumed story in the spirit of Lewis Carroll, filled with characteristic Pre-Raphaelite gestures, rich color palette and clear references to Freud. The unplayed "theatricality" of each shot is striking - vintage costumes and the atmosphere of an old English house perfectly help to reveal the author's intention.
The viewer sees girls looking for some kind of forbidden knowledge. They seem to be flirting with danger. An empty cage, a luminous box, a red wallet - all these, as conceived by the author, are psychosexual metaphors indicating the awakening of sexual consciousness in young girls. Despite the subtext, the photographs, however, look quite innocent - there is definitely no cruelty in them. Critics note the influence on the work of Andres such masters of photography as Gregory Crewdson and Cindy Sherman, but her style is unique.
Andres' solo exhibitions have taken place in many American cities, in particular, in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, as well as in Portland, Oregon, where she lives and works. Her work has been featured in major publications such as New York Times Magazine, Time, Artforum, Exit Magazine, Art News, Oprah Magazine, Elle Magazine and many others.
A completely different perception of childhood can be seen in the works of the Brooklyn artist Adrienne Broome. She offers viewers a magical journey through colored worlds.
