Garmisch-Partenkirchen - one of the coziest Bavarian districts, famous not only as a wonderful ski resort, but also as a city-museum. The streets of Garmisch-Partenkirchen resemble an art gallery, because the walls of almost all houses are decorated with magnificent frescoes, mainly on biblical themes.
Garmisch and Partenkirchen were two independent settlements until 1935, but in connection with the Winter Olympic Games, Adolf Hitler forcibly united these settlements into one district. Germany needed a large city in which the participants of the Olympics, as well as numerous spectators, could settle. In addition, in the region of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, there is the highest point in Germany - the Zugspitze mountain, which made it possible to hold the first ever ski competition.
Until now, the ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a favorite winter destination, but in the summer there is something to do. While hiking, you can enjoy the beautiful panoramas of the Alpine mountains, boat trips on mountain lakes, as well as the cable car ride to the Zugspitze summit are popular among tourists.
The town itself is not inferior in beauty to nature: the windows of houses are traditionally decorated with flowers, and the walls - with picturesque frescoes. Some depict historical scenes, others - biblical. The architectural ensemble of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is complemented by two churches of St. Martin. One of them was built in the 18th century, and the other (made in the Gothic style) dates back to 1280!
By the way, on our website Kulturologiya.ru we have already written about the Australian town of Sheffield, which can also be called an art gallery, since the walls of local farmers' houses are decorated with masterful frescoes.
