Spaniard Luciana Novo she does not "lisp" with her audience: her sculptures are a tough, shocking provocation, a statement on painful and forbidden topics. So, one of her latest works - the head of a polar bear - recalls the threat that humanity poses to rare species of wild animals.
The sculpture of Luciana Novo is stylized as a typical "hunting trophy" - the head of an animal sticking out of a special frame. However, upon closer inspection, it turns out that the bear is covered with thick layers of paint. The provocative nature of the work of the Spanish woman is already noticeable here: she plays with the audience's impressions, makes him bewildered and strives to see all the details, which means - to hold his attention for a long time at work.
A work entitled in Spanish Cabeza de oso polar, is, on the one hand, a statement about the problem of environmental protection: the polar bear has the status of a "vulnerable" species in the international Red Book. However, it is also a reflection on the essence and boundaries of the visual arts. The bear looks like a smudge of acrylic paint that suddenly burst out of the frame, from 2D to 3D. Novo herself prefers to remain silent about all interpretations of her work, giving art critics and ordinary viewers the opportunity to argue to their fullest.
Luciana Novo is far from the first artist who is concerned about the problems of ecology and the existence of animal species on the verge of extinction. Japanese Rio shimura became famous for sculptures depicting endangered animals, and an illustrator Ralph Steadman recently presented a series of drawings of birds that were exterminated by man. However, Luciana Novo's interests are not limited to rare bears. Among her works are paintings and sculptural images of ugly people or even individual parts of their bodies. According to some critics, Novo's work fits perfectly into the context of the recent panic over the coming end of the world: the sculptor writes out "a verdict for the entire 21st century."
