Absolutely all people are created equal. And only the living conditions made them so different from each other. But, if you look closely, it turns out that even perfect opposites have much more in common with each other than it might seem at first glance. A series of photographs is dedicated to this. Created equal by Mark Laita, an American photographer of Lithuanian origin.
Mark Lighta worked on this project for eight years. During this time, he traveled around forty-eight American states, photographing people he met along the way. During this time, the photographer took several thousand photographs, of which only a few dozen were included in the “Created equal” version presented to the public in the form of a book of the same name.
This book consists of diptychs. And these are not images in the style of numerous projects like "it was and it is". Each spread of Mark Lighta's book "Created equal" contains two photographs, which depict seemingly completely different, but so similar people. Only external conditions made them literally opposites to each other.
Who could have imagined that there are so many similarities between a fashion model and an obese lady, a Baptist priest and members of the Ku Klux Klan, an astronaut and a city madman, a homeless person and a real estate developer, an Orthodox Jew and a resident of Dixieland, a butcher and a vegetarian, a rodeo participant and a rock musician, auto mechanic and etiquette teacher?
Only Mark Light! But in order to understand all this, he had to spend many years and travel all over America. In general, his series of works "Created equal" once again proves that only limited people can live with stereotypes, who have never traveled outside their town or region, have never looked around them.
