Probably, no one has the illusion that pirates live only in books and in pictures: dramatic news about new tricks of modern filibusters from Somalia now and then flicker on TV. However, sea gentlemen of fortune can be more than just bloodthirsty bandits. The upcoming Tampa Festival is a place where the most harmless and fun pirates of the 21st century gather.
Tampa is a medium-sized city in the state of Florida. While our streets are covered with snow, the shores of the Gulf of Mexico are warm and sunny. Hundreds of years ago, in these places, pirates were an inexhaustible topic of conversation and everyday reality (did you forget that the legendary Caribbean Sea is very close?). Today, Caribbean pirates have practically disappeared, but the memory of those days, fanned by gunpowder smoke and incredible stories, remains.
Plot Gasparilla Pirate Festival based on the legend of the pirate captain Jose Gasparilla, who allegedly invaded the city in the 16th century. On January 29, a grandiose cortege of 165 ships with "pirates of the 21st century" begins the procession from the bay, and then disembarks the corsairs in Tampa. The mayor of the city gives the keys to Tampa to "Jose Gasparilla", after which crowds of mummers "filibusters" parade along the main street, firing blank cartridges in all directions and throwing beads and coins.
In the evening, the whole action turns into a general feast and concert, and crowds of pirates and tourists wander through the streets until the last drop of rum. The scale of the event is evidenced by the fact that 400,000 tourists come to it every year. Of course, everyone can look at the "pirates of the 21st century" sailing under multi-colored flags, but not everyone is allowed to join their ranks: only members of closed carnival communities, born natives of the city, participate in the "swim". Well, an ordinary tourist can put on a pirate cocked hat and enjoy life with might and main.
