Everyone knows that paper is made of wood, which means that a book is, consider, a former branch of a tree. Everyone knows this, but only an artist Kylie Stillman is committed to bringing books back to nature. No, she does not bury them on a spring morning in a clearing in the forest, she mastered book carving, giving preference to it just the natural theme.
Designers and artists around the world have long been pondering and experimenting on how to bring paper made from wood back to nature. An example is Newspaper Wood, created by Dutchman Mieke Meijer, “wood” made from paper, from old newspapers, magazines and books. But this is a purely utilitarian, practical approach to the above problem. But the artist Kylie Stillman looks at her from the point of view of creativity.
Stillman decided to "return" the books to nature with the help of artistic cutting, the technology of which she herself developed and mastered to perfection.
When creating her works, Kylie Stillman takes one or several books, and then carves in them any image on a natural theme: plants, animals, whole panoramas depicting flora and fauna.
Kylie Stillman's work can probably be compared with taxidermy - the art of creating animal figures from the remains of these same animals. But the artist does almost the same thing with the remains of plants.
It is clear that you cannot assemble a new tree from old books, magazines and newspapers, this is not a LEGO constructor. But it is quite possible to create his external outlines, his image. This is exactly what Kylie Stillman does.

Book carving. "Adaptations" by Brian Dettmer
As a child, we were all taught to treat books with care and respect: to wrap them in covers, to carefully turn the pages and in no case to draw in the margins and not to wrap the corners. And if the book is torn or frayed, it should be referred to a "doctor" who will "cure" the torn pages, glue the fallen leaves, or even completely replace the binding of the injured poor fellow. In the hands of Brian Dettmer (Brian Dettmer) books are given new life
