According to Jonathan Callan, most people would agree that the main value of any book lies in its content. A novel, poem, or encyclopedic article is far more important than stapled sheets of paper and ink. This is not to say that Jonathan Callan handles books with care, as we all were taught in school. On the contrary, any librarian would be horrified at what he turns printed volumes into. The author drills holes in them, cuts the paper into tiny particles and glues dozens of books together, intricately wrapping the pages. “That’s the kind of person I am,” explains Jonathan, “I am interested in breaking things. Most of the items don't seem real to me until I figure out what's inside them."
Jonathan Callan was born in Manchester in 1961. Now the author lives and works in London, and his works are exhibited not only at home, but also abroad. Callan's works are included in collections of museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, British Museum in London, Whitworth Art Gallery (Manchester) and Ferens Art Gallery (Hull).
