Visitors to the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, entering the Polish pavilion, found themselves next to a strange structure made of birdcages, at the foot of which artificial clouds swirled. Moreover, this kind of "Emergency exit" (this is the name of the installation) could be used by everyone, having made a symbolic leap into the unknown and feeling the taste of freedom.

The installation Emergency Exit, built from a collection of metal birdcages, resembles a ski jump in Warsaw's Mokotów district, a surreal example of socialist architecture now in ruins. Visitors to the Polish Pavilion could climb to the top of the structure and jump down into the swirling artificial clouds: this act, according to the authors, symbolizes ultimate freedom and urban escapism.

The authors of the installation, Agnieszka Kurant and Aleksandra Wasilkowska, present the city as an unpredictable complex system, the collective understanding of which consists of intersecting realities and imaginary spaces. Nine out of ten things that influence our behavior are invisible and intangible. "Emergency exit" is a kind of mechanism for moving a person to other realities. It is a portable opening into the unknown, a catalyst for new, conflicting emotions and needs. The moment of leap, as conceived by the creators of the installation, is a way out of the modernist paradigm in architecture, where emotional space is ignored and considered outdated.

The authors of the installation strive to go beyond the logic of urban reality by creating “urbanistic portable holes”: intermediate spaces, places of uncertainty, doubt and heterogeneity of temporary space, such as abandoned or unfinished buildings, places of disasters and accidents, roofs and tunnels. The title "Emergency Exit" contains a dose of irony about health and safety regulation in buildings, which seeks to plan, control risks and eliminate the elements of randomness and unexpectedness.
