In June this year in the English city of Middlesbrough was opened the largest sculpture in the UK - "Temenos" by the famous Indian author Anish Kapoor (Anish Kapoor). For the author, this is not the first such project: a few years ago, his sculpture appeared in Chicago. "Cloud Gate" … And if the "Gate" has already won the love of tourists and local residents, then the English sculpture still has everything ahead.
In theory, "Temenos" is the first of five sculptures to appear in the Tisza Valley with the aim of giving this industrial area a modern touch and attracting young people and tourists. When the next works will appear and whether they will appear at all - the question is still open. They say that the global financial crisis put the project on hold. Although, perhaps, few people regret it: the local residents consider the $ 5 million spent on “Temenos” as a waste of money.
Since Temenos is currently the largest sculpture in Great Britain, one cannot but mention its size. So, the height of the structure is 50 meters, the length is 110 meters, and its weight is 156 tons. The diameter of the larger circle is 32 meters, the size of the smaller ellipse is 2816 meters. Over 8 kilometers of steel wire with a total weight of 20 tons went to the middle part of the sculpture.
Although translated from Greek "temenos" means "sacred part of the earth", the huge sculpture by Anish Kapoor is a rather controversial work. So far, people are quite wary of him and criticize him rather than praise him. However, it is too early to draw conclusions: after all, the appearance of the Eiffel Tower in Paris at one time also caused a sea of discontent, and now it is a symbol of the whole country.
By the way, there is a chance that "Temenos" will not remain the largest sculpture in Great Britain for long. Another project of the same Anish Kapoor, timed to coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games in London, can take the palm from her - ArcelorMittal Orbit.
