The art of light sculpture appeared not so long ago, but it is always a pleasure to watch such works. Bright or barely flickering in the dark, they seem to carry some kind of mystery, immersing the audience in an atmosphere of mysticism and magic. A couple of days ago we watched the light waves with delight Paul Friedlander, and today we will get acquainted with another example of this trend in art - the installation "Swarm Light".
Swarm Light is a new light sculpture presented by London-based design studio Random International. The piece consists of a plurality of LEDs interconnected by a copper wire. In addition to metal, light sources are combined into a single system using electronics. But the most interesting thing is that the installation "comes into contact" with the surrounding world, instantly reacting to the changes taking place in it. Attached microphones pick up sounds, and the software translates them into light animations, making the little lights go out and light up again.
In fact, "Swarm Light" is better seen in action, rather than reading explanations about its design. When you see this stunning piece of art that resembles a swarm of fireflies, all these "diodes", "microphones" and "electronics" instantly recede into the background, and it begins to seem that the installation actually lives its own life.
Random International was founded in 2002 by three friends Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch. The authors call their activities "experimenting with the aim of developing a new artistic vocabulary." Their projects and installations combine the latest achievements of science, design, art and architecture. The works of "Random International" were presented at exhibitions in Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, USA; many of the daring experiments have won prestigious awards, the most recent being Designer Of The Future 2010 at the Design Miami / Basel international exhibition.
