Inhabitants of the deep sea often inspire artists to work. An example of this is the contrasting photographs of Mark Laita from the Sea cycle or flying jellyfish in Zhou Fan's paintings. The work Jelly Swarm, created by Joseph Wu, is also dedicated to jellyfish, namely, bioluminescent jellyfish.
The Jelly Swarm installation is a swarm of ninety-four jellyfish, made by the author using the origami technique. Each of these paper objects is attached to a single aluminum frame with an LED module hidden underneath.
During its work, this installation changes color. Moreover, she does it interactively, depending on the desires of visitors. To do this, people who come to watch the Jelly Swarm need to all together touch a special touch frame. The more people do this, and the longer it takes, the more often the colors from the lighting of the installation will change and the brighter they will be.
Joseph Wu's installation Jelly Swarm is installed in one of the pavilions of the Vancouver Aquarium. It was created for an exhibition dedicated to luminous organisms living at great depths. Bioluminescent jellyfish are one of such deep-sea creatures that fascinate with their beauty only a few people who are lucky enough to see them. And now, thanks to the installation Jelly Swarm, they, albeit in the form of origami, can be met by thousands of Vancouver residents, as well as guests of this Canadian city.
