The author distinguishes the usually invisible aspects of existing concepts or objects, and projects them onto each other, finding similarities between such incongruous things as the Coriolis effect and cryptography, the Earth's magnetic field and the rock ridges of the Great Plains of the United States.
The series of photographic works created by Jim Sanborn is called Topographic projections and implied geometries. When creating them, the author chooses some wonderful object, for example, Notom Rock or Horse Valley in Utah, an ancient tower in Ireland, Bandon Bay in Oregon, and then overlays them with a powerful light projector with any schedule suitable for their outline or a grid.
He shoots the resulting effect on a camera, setting a slow shutter speed and exposure.
