What do you associate with Gothic? The Middle Ages, cathedrals, lancet windows and arches … Wim Delvoye in his works also uses all the traditional elements of the Gothic style - all the same arches, all the same pointed forms … But the things he creates are in the last place associated with gothic and art in general. What is this? Construction equipment models!
Wim Delvoy is undoubtedly a very original person. He spends most of his time on a farm in Belgium tattooing his pigs. All the more surprising and unexpected his creative move was the demonstration of a collection of construction equipment, openwork and gothic. Huge dump trucks, concrete mixers and cranes seem to have been made in the distant Middle Ages.
In the works of Wim Delvoy, the divine is combined with the mundane, the past meets the present, and austere functionality cannot resist the onslaught of openwork patterns. In life-size replicas of construction equipment, the author combines medieval craftsmanship with 21st century technology. These massive sculptures are made of steel so delicately that familiar symbols of productivity are transformed into richly decorated non-utilitarian objects.
Wim Delvoy is originally from Werwick (Belgium), and now lives in the Belgian city of Ghent. His works have been exhibited at the New Museum of Modern Art in New York (USA), Art Gallery in Manchester (UK), Museum of Modern Art in Lyon (France).
