British artist Abigail Reynolds is creating a series of collages that combine old photographs from different editions, resulting in abstract and very unusual paintings.
Abigail Reynolds collects old travel guides. From hundreds of photographs printed in them, she searches for and selects those that have the same scale and were shot from approximately the same point, but belong to different years. When the artist finds pictures that match each other, she cuts the pages and folds them in such a way that a new image is obtained.
In the process of working on the collage, Abigail only cuts the original photos, without cutting off their parts, and then folds the paper inward or outward. Because of this, the final image is not flat, but three-dimensional. If we straighten all the folded elements of the collage, then we again get two original images.
To date, Abigail has created two series of collages - "The Universal Now" and "Interiors", as well as a number of non-serial images. “The Universal Now” is a collage of photographs of the same place taken in different years, which, according to the author, emphasizes the connection between times. For his works, Abigail uses both images of all recognizable landmarks and photographs of little-known landscapes.
"Interiors", as the name implies, are collages of several photographs of the same interior, also taken at different periods of time.
Abigail Reynolds was born in 1970 and lives and works in London, as well as in the town of St. Just (Cornwall). Her work can be seen in London's Seventeen Gallery or on the artist's personal website.
