For most of his life, Serge Mendjisky was a successful artist whose work has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States. However, in 2000, he realized that in this role he had already achieved everything he could. “I started repeating myself,” says the author. Then, instead of a brush, he took a camera in his hands - and soon the whole world started talking about Menjisky as the author of unique collages.
Photo collages by Serge Mendzhisky are often called "photographic painting" or "spatial chronography". In the process of working on each image, the author takes many pictures of the same landscape, then cuts them into hundreds of thin strips and connects the selected elements into one whole. In fact, it's like painting, but instead of paints, there are particles of photographs. Serge photographs well-known places - New York, Paris, London, Venice, Moscow. The work may seem simple only at first glance: for example, on one of the London landscapes, the author worked 16 hours a day for two months.
“It's easy to destroy a landscape full of perspectives. The challenge is to recreate it,” says the photographer. But he copes with his task brilliantly, creating in his works a multidimensional reality, where space and time are perceived in a completely new way. City panoramas are the most frequent, but not the only subject of Serge Mendzhisky's collages. In addition, in his images you can see musical instruments, bottles, and the author plans to create photo collages of metro stations.
Serge Mendzhisky was born in 1929 in Paris. His father was an artist, so the creative atmosphere surrounded the boy from childhood. Pablo Picasso once told Serge that real Cubism can only be obtained through photography. Perhaps it was these words of the great master that Menjisky recalled when he decided to leave painting for another area of art. Now the author is already 81 years old, but he continues to create and is not going to stop. “I don’t want to get old, I’m stubborn and I still want to say a lot,” says Serge.
The works of Serge Mendzhisky are presented on his website. In addition, from May 28 to June 27, 2010, an exhibition of the author's works will be held at the Heritage Gallery in Moscow.
