Not only Hollywood directors, but also a photographer have succumbed to the new fashion to make the adventures of Batman, Spiderman and others like them more "vital" and "psychological" Paul Armstrong … Work on the cycle "Scenes from the life of an aging superhero" (Everyday Occurances of Aging Superhero) took three years - from 2008 to 2010.
In the photographs, we see Armstrong himself in the image of one of the most popular superheroes of the Marvel company - Captain America. But the aging Captain seems to have retired - now he is just an unshaven middle-aged man with a beer belly and an unsettled life.
The superhero, who recently became the hero of the successful film "The First Avenger", spends time in a gloomy mood and, as a rule, alone. To make the circumstances very clear, Armstrong accompanies each photo with an explanatory caption. For example: "During breakfast, Captain America feels especially lonely. He usually eats alone, in the dark." Or: "There is always a chance to find a second wind, to be reborn. But who is worthy of this chance?"
Superheroes from Marvel and DC Comics have long been an important part of not only American but also world pop culture. Contemporary artists recognize the aesthetic value of comics and fantasize about their theme: take at least a studio WonderBros, with their images of Superman and company in the style of cubism.
The idea of an "aged superhero" is also not new. But if in the pictures Donald Soffity "sunset" of law enforcement officers looks funny, then Paul Armstrong stands for "the truth of life."
