There are many tribes on earth that still live far from civilization and adhere to primitive rituals and traditions. Some communities are famous for their cruelty, others for strange (in our opinion) notions of beauty, and still others for bizarre rituals and images. So, for example, the Papuans of the tribe asaro mudmen more like alien creatures than terrestrial creatures. Why do they smear their bodies with clay and wear ritual masks, find out from our photo review.
There are a lot of photos of representatives of asaro mudmen on the Internet. And this is not surprising. Representatives of this outlandish tribe annually organize an exciting show in the city of Goroka (Papua New Guinea), where they willingly demonstrate authentic masks to visiting tourists. Most of the masks look terrifying: huge fangs, disproportionate ears, grin-like smiles, tusks and horns …
In addition to wearing strange masks, the Papuans also cover the body with river clay for the festival. Even their name asaro mudmen comes from the local river Asaro and literally means "people covered in mud." According to an ancient legend, this tribe once suffered from an enemy invasion, people were forced to flee to the river to escape. It was there that they smeared themselves with mud, and the enemies who arrived at the place in the middle of the night took them for spirits and fled. Whether this story is true or not is anyone's guess. However, the tradition is still alive today. In addition, the white color in the culture of asaro mudmen is considered mourning, which further enhances the likeness of the spirits of death.
The Asaro Mudmen tribe is harmless, despite its frightening appearance. But the tree-dwelling Karowai from Papua New Guinea gained fame cannibals … A meeting with representatives of this tribe for a stranger can be fatal …
