Photographer Michael Hughes has traveled to 200 countries around the world and created a huge collection of unique images, photographing cheap souvenirs bought by him against the backdrop of famous landmarks, famous historical sites and monuments.
Taking a glimpse of the photo, you might think that the real Big Ben is towering in front of us. But then you notice a hand below and an incredible optical illusion is revealed. Tourist photographer Michael Hughes creates unusual pictures where the real and fictional worlds merge.
The British-born German photographer says that the idea to create such works came about by accident while he was on a tourist platform at Cape Lorelei when he accidentally picked up a postcard he had bought as a gift for his daughter. He was amazed at the coincidence, as the image on the card accidentally hit the point from which it was taken. Since that time, photography has grown into a hobby and a passion, forcing Michael Hughes to go on long journeys to simply photograph a souvenir against the backdrop of a real landmark.
In order to take an accurate photo, Michael takes 50 shots each with a digital camera. It is necessary to find the right angle and position for the souvenir to fit neatly into the landscape.
Michael's 20 best photographs have been included in a book called Souvenirs and published by graphic design company Fivefootsix, based in London.
