In popular science literature, you can often read the opinion that writing in Russia appeared together with the adoption of Christianity by Prince Vladimir in 988. However, is this so, and when the Slavic writing really appeared, we will consider in this article.
When writing appeared in Russia
The emergence of writing is closely related to Christianity, but it happened before the official adoption of the new religion - at the beginning of the 10th century. At the prince's court, during divine services and even for everyday needs, writing was used before the adoption of Christianity. Writing came to Russia not thanks to Vladimir, but several decades before him, this was facilitated by ties with Byzantium and contacts with the Western and Southern Slavs, who had already become acquainted with the book culture.
Certificates and contracts
The date of the appearance of writing was not simply invented by historians. This is evidenced by, albeit few, but convincing texts. The Slavs wrote on various subjects, for example, a poker with an inscription was found near Smolensk, they were in business correspondence with neighbors, and of course, religious life could not do without books. The letters and contracts of Russian merchants and ambassadors who arrived in Constantinople were written in two languages - Church Slavonic and Greek. There is evidence of the existence of a Christian community in Kiev, which could not do without liturgical books.
Vedas and Slavic writing
Alas, no. "Veles's book" and similar works are just the fruit of the work of the authors of the XIX century. Scientists have proven that they use late vocabulary, and the spelling does not match any of the languages (letters are often inserted and deleted arbitrarily without taking into account any rules), and in a real language such random changes cannot occur.
Any language, including the ancient one, is a system that lives by the rules, but the Veles Book and similar works have no rules. The statement that writing came to Russia with the adoption of Christianity is almost true. Book culture was closely related to religious life, but it was several decades ahead of the official adoption of the new religion, and the Slavic Vedas are just fiction!
BONUS
And not so long ago, scientists found letters from the 13th century - homework and notes on birch bark left by a little boy.

What people of Russia adopted Christianity before Vladimir baptized Russia
The generally accepted date for the beginning of the Christian era on the territory of modern Russia is the 10th century. More precisely, the year 988. It was in this year that the Kiev prince Vladimir began to baptize Russia, making Christianity the official religion of the state. However, the Slavs were far from the first people (within the borders of the modern Russian Federation) who departed from paganism and accepted faith in Jesus Christ
Which predictions of the futurists of the 1950s have already come true, and which will come true soon: distance learning, drones, etc
Futurology is a very interesting teaching that is at the intersection of science, art and common sense. It has nothing to do with predictions, since futurologists always carefully follow technical innovations and try to guess the vector of human development. Sometimes it works out well, and then we admire their perspicacity, sometimes the trends are guessed wrong, and in that case it looks funny. Not so long ago, another direction has become fashionable - retrofuturism, - the study of prog
Mark Twain is an "American vandal" who skillfully combined writing and travel
While most people know Mark Twain primarily as the author of the famous novels about Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, at one time the author gained his fame thanks to completely different works - his outstanding and witty notes from numerous travels. “Travel is disastrous for prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, which is why many people need it so badly,” wrote Mark Twain. - You cannot come to broad, healthy and tolerant views of people and things, vegetation
Drawings or writing? The art of decorating letters
I am sure that each of you has ever drawn letters or numbers in a notebook, notebook or on a sheet of ordinary Whatman paper, and then decorated them with ligature, ornament, flower petals, turning the text into a picture. And skilled craftsmen sometimes bring their letters to the point that they are not that difficult to read - you will never guess that behind the floral ornament there is a word, or even several
