They say that one in the field is not a warrior, but a 60-year-old man has proved that an ordinary person can not only fight the harsh climatic conditions of his country, but even come out of this battle as a winner.
Abdul Samad Sheikh (Abdul Samad Sheikh) now has a part-time job driving a rickshaw carriage in Bangladesh. He earns very little, but as Abdul himself admits, he does not need much: there is a goal in his life, and he consistently follows the path to the fulfillment of this goal. His journey began when Abdul was only 12 years old. It was then that he decided that he would plant at least one tree a day every day, so that the desert area around him healed with new life.
In his hometown of Faridpur, Abdul is called "Wood Samad" because of his hobby, which has literally become the meaning of life for the old man. Abdul's job is low-paying - he makes about 100 taka a day, which is about $ 1.25. That's barely enough to feed his entire family, but Abdul still finds a way to save money and buy at least one tree from the local agricultural center each. day. For an old man, this is a kind of obligation to the world around him, his desire to give nature a debt for his life and the lives of his loved ones.
As Abdul admits, planting a tree a day has become such a strong habit that if for some reason he cannot do it, he cannot sleep all night, and then next time he plants not one, but two trees. “I plant trees on state-owned land, so no one can claim to cut them down. I water my trees, take care of them. And if I see that someone breaks off branches or chops down the whole tree, I swear and indignant a lot. I love all life on earth, both animals and people, but trees are special for me."
Abdul has a wife, Jorn, and four children. When deciding where to spend his day's earnings, Abdul usually prioritizes buying trees, which his wife often scolds for. “He earns a little already, these funds are barely enough for the usual things our family needs,” says Jorna. - But does he listen to me? It just can't be stopped! " “And I never blamed my father for planting trees,” says 30-year-old son Abdul. "I think this is a wonderful thing, useful for our society."
People living in the same city with Abdul know about his hobby. Some residents remember him planting trees from his childhood. To date, Abdul has planted at least 17,500 trees - and that's a lot. “Abdul is a very humble person,” says the old man's neighbor, “and his work really inspires me. It's not even just about the trees. He is a very good person in himself. As soon as you ask him about something, Abdul will always do everything. You rarely meet such people."
After Abdul's story became known, The Daily Star presented Abdul with Taka 100,000 (about $ 1,253) financial aid to help the old man build a good home for his family.
In our article " There would be a desire"we told about another, even more amazing story: two friends, one of whom is blind and the other is armless, planted more than 10,000 trees, turning a lifeless valley into a beautiful grove for 12 years.

Marlene Dietrich and Ernest Hemingway: more than friendship, less than love
The boundaries beyond which friendship between a man and a woman ends and something more begins is very difficult to define. Especially when it comes to creative individuals. Ernest Hemingway called his relationship with Marlene Dietrich "unsynchronized passion": he woke up feelings when she was not free, and vice versa. Their romance lasted almost 30 years - perhaps so long precisely because it remained epistolary (now they would say - virtual). But there was so much passion in these letters that
