Scottish artist Douglas McDougall calls himself a geographer of the human face and psyche. As befits a geographer, he studies plains and depressions, rocks and crevices, forests, seas and mountains, documenting his discoveries in a very specific way. Douglas McDougall draws unusual outline maps with charcoal on sheets of snow-white paper - portraits of urban outsiders, in other words, marginalized people. These are the landscapes that the artist is studying.

These faces, that is, landscapes, are a real find for both the artist and the geographer. "Outsiders" lead a special way of life that leaves indelible marks on their faces. This gives them uniqueness, adds a special street flavor, which cannot be overlooked even in a black and white picture. Similar marks are left on the ground by natural disasters and phenomena, making the geographer yet another riddle of ingenuity.

Characteristic characters, atypical faces, sincere and lively emotions that illuminate the gloomy "landscape" like the rays of the sun shining through the clouds, all this is an art project CitizenScapes, on which Douglas McDougall has been working all this time. Looking at these faces, one can see in them a part of the sad story that lies behind the fate of each of them. And perhaps consider the author's interest in this topic. Does the artist have a personal reason to be interested in the "backyards" of city life and to study their "landscapes" so carefully?
