In recent years, even in our vastness, the idea of factories as soulless industrial monsters has begun to change to a much more positive one. As examples, we can cite the Vysota 239 workshop as part of the Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant, which looks like a toy, or a new plant. Dniprostal in Dnepropetrovsk, in the design of which he was involved Olafur Eliasson - one of the greatest sculptors of our time.
Back in September, Olafur Eliasson presented his work Little Sun in Venice, a solar-powered lamp designed to provide light at night to the inhabitants of poor countries in Asia and Africa. And at the beginning of October, this Danish-Icelandic author honored Dnepropetrovsk with his visit, where he also presented the sun, but this time it was truly huge!
Olafur Eliasson's visit to the million-plus industrial city of Central Ukraine was timed to coincide with the opening of the Dneprostal plant there, the largest electric steel-making complex in Europe. At the entrance to this enterprise, a new work of the sculptor was installed - "Dnepropetrovsk Dawn", depicting a huge sun rising over the industrial zone.
The work symbolizes a new era of Ukrainian metallurgy, which begins thanks to the emergence of this large plant. At the same time, the "sun" from Olafur Eliasson stands on a sufficiently high pedestal, due to which it can be seen from most districts of Dnepropetrovsk.
In addition to "Dnepropetrovsk Dawn", on the territory of the Dneprostal plant there are four more works by Olafur Eliasson, one of which, mirrors stylized as drops of hot metal, is located directly in the smelting shop.
The artist also created an entrance complex at the entrance to Dneprostal, a drawing on the facade of the enterprise and a bridge connecting the two workshops of the plant.
The appearance of a plant-museum in Dnepropetrovsk is due to the fact that its owner, billionaire Victor Pinchuk, is known for his long-standing love for modern culture. He even owns the Kiev Pinchuk Art Center gallery, which regularly hosts exhibitions of major contemporary artists, including Olafur Eliasson.
The residents of Dnepropetrovsk themselves reacted rather ambiguously to the emergence of a new urban dominant. Not all of them have an idea of contemporary art in general and the work of Olafur Eliasson in particular. So among the townspeople, various versions immediately appeared about the purpose of this object, the most popular of which was its assignment to emitter towers, similar to those mentioned in the novel "Inhabited Island" by the Strugatsky brothers.
