X-rays, as a rule, are associated with diseases, medical examinations and rarely cause positive emotions. But the artist Matthew Cox was able to see them as more than just the result of medical research. By adding embroidery to the pictures, the author turned them into rather peculiar works of art.
In a series of works "Thread Into Plastic" Matthew Cox combined the incompatible: X-rays of a person and French satin stitch embroidery. Embroidering directly on top of the film, the author supplemented the images with elements that, in his opinion, were missing. Moreover, the choice of these elements deserves special attention. For example, in his work "Torso" he not only complements the chest photograph with a woman's hand, but puts a delicate daffodil flower into his thin fingers.
By complementing dark gloomy shots with embroidery, Matthew Cox not only adds color to the image, but also softens it and makes you think about the person in the photo and try to imagine what he really looks like. Some viewers believe that such work would be much easier to complete with the help of paint, because it is easier to apply a drawing on a thick film than to embroider it. However, the author does not agree with this: in his opinion, the drawn images would absolutely not cope with the task of evoking quite definite associations “embroidery - knitting - healing - medical care”. In addition, Matthew claims that he combines two principles in his works: masculine (he is personified by x-ray) and feminine (embroidery).
Matthew Cox was born in Texas and currently lives in Philadelphia. In addition to the project with embroidered X-rays, the author is also engaged in oil painting. Cox's works are in many galleries in the United States, as well as in private collections.
