Carving three-dimensional sculptures from old and useless books, or book art is not new at all. Earlier, we talked about the English artist Su Blackwell, who breathes new life into forgotten books. American photographer Thomas Allen works only with tabloid novels, creating his own fictional world of detectives, cowboys and their faithful beauties.
Photo artist Thomas Allen creates intricate plot diagrams using old paperback books and magazines. Cutting out figures of people from book covers, Allen reproduces whole plot pictures and scenes, reminiscent of frozen frames from movies of the 40-50s, or Westerns. Each book installation has its own context, storyline and story. Allen carves people and furnishings from books, carefully grouping and arranging his paper characters, and then photographing the scene.
Anyone who, in childhood, was fond of popular books, in particular detectives, looking at three-dimensional diagrams by Thomas Allen, will immediately recall their favorite characters from exciting detective stories, westerns and romance novels they have read.
Today, Allen creates his alternative real worlds by carving his fictional characters with a knife or blade from the soft covers of old books, posters, illustrations for a novel, giving them a new form, organizing a new storyline, and then filming under the right lighting. and angle for unexpected interpretation.
