Irishman James Joyce is one of the most difficult to read writers in the history of literature. And his romance Finnegans Wake so twisted and complicated that the author himself, by the end of it, did not understand everything in this text. But American Joseph Kosuth In his installation, he tried to highlight the main thing from this work, and, moreover, in a visual, very visual form.
The artist Joseph Kossuth is known worldwide for his ability to combine visual and textual components in his work. An example of this statement is the CHAIR series of chairs, consisting of five stools, folded in the letters C, H, A, I and R.
Kossuth's new work, titled The wake (an arrangement of references with all the appearance of autonomy), is dedicated to the work of James Joyce, specifically to his novel Finnegans Wake.
Finnegans Wake is probably the most difficult work in all world literature to read and perceive. But at the same time, it became the conceptual basis for literary deconstruction and all postmodernism as such.
This text consists of words in more than seventy languages of the world, and some of the words Joyce invented himself. So by the end of writing the novel, the author himself did not understand all of its parts.
By our time, it is believed that the most erudite polyglot reader can understand a maximum of 70 percent of the meaning of this work. Nobody will fully understand Finnegans Wake!
But Joseph Kossuth tried in his work The wake (an arrangement of references with all the appearance of autonomy) to convey at least the basics of the structure and plot of this novel, moreover, in visual form.
Having presented this work in Istanbul's Kuad Gallery, Kossuth hung on the walls in the room several dozen English and Turkish words and phrases found in the novel Finnegans Wake. Moreover, he did it in the order in which these passages appeared in the text.
Of course, a person who sees this work will not be considered to have read Joyce's novel. However, he will touch at least a little this great work, which is absolutely impossible to adequately translate into any language (for example, the book has not been fully translated into Turkish, and into Russian too).
