Kings and nobles were proud of the family resemblance, and in our time people continue to be proud of family traits not only of character, but also of appearance. Plump lips, strong-willed chin, hump nose, wide cheekbones, high forehead, big eyes, long fingers … Looking at mother and daughter, father and son, brother and sister, outsiders immediately notice their external similarity in these family traits. Or maybe they don't, because the relatives are not that alike? Photographer Ulric Collette from Quebec devoted a whole study to this topic, which turned into a series of collage portraits Genetic portraits … Naturally, Ulrik began the research with his own family, "cutting" photographs of relatives, and trying on halves to find out how pronounced these same family traits are, how they are similar, and how different members of his family differ from each other, and how he himself is similar on his father, brothers, cousins …

As a result of "surgical interventions" in the photographs of relatives, Ulric Collett has created a number of amazing, interesting, but sometimes eerie collage-portraits. Yes, old age, illness and injury do not paint a person, facial hair on men, as well as makeup on women, make it much more difficult to compare relatives. Still, the Genetic portraits series turned out to be very informative, and I suppose not only for Ulrik and his family.

In addition to his relatives, Ulric Collett also photographed completely strangers who agreed to participate in an interesting experiment. These and other photo collages can be seen on the Genetic portraits project site.
