How often, when visiting museums, exhibitions, or even watching the work of certain artists on the Internet, we are involuntarily visited by thoughts: “What is this? This is anything but art. I would have drawn better myself. " Probably, the workers of the Vienna Museum of Modern Art have heard a lot of such opinions, since in 2008 they opened the exhibition "Bad Painting - Good Art", dedicated to the phenomenon of "bad paintings".

As the curators of the museum note, "bad" artists criticize painting from the inside and thus open up new opportunities. It all began in the 1920s with the work of Francis Picabia, Giorgio de Chirico and Rene Magritte. Then, in the 1960s, Georg Baselitz used "bad painting" as a strategy of protest: he wanted to paint "really bad pictures" against the beautiful. In the 1980s, this trend reached a new level, but nowadays anyone can create "something" and declare themselves an artist.

By the way, the very definition of "bad art" can be interpreted in different ways: it can be a neglect of technique, rejection of the usual forms or gravitation towards kitsch. The exhibition featured famous works by 21 artists who did not fit into the canons of traditional art and could hardly be considered beautiful. Interestingly, judging by the reviews on the Internet, many visitors did not find the exhibited paintings so terrible, and each work found its defenders and admirers. Here is the phenomenon of "bad art", which the curators of the museum are talking about.
