Imagine the near future: you are walking in the park, the kid got tired and decided to sit down. But instead of an ordinary bench, you will find something completely extraordinary - an amazing construction of so-called pipes. It was on this material that the Belgian designer Sebastien Wierinck became obsessed, tirelessly designing the furniture of the future.
Sebastien Wierinck, creator furniture of the future, in which there will be much more pipes, even soft ones, than trees, we are obsessed with our work. He is a real philosopher, because he uses such material for a reason.
Plastic pipes were originally used for underground urban distribution networks supplying apartments, enterprises, neighborhoods, transport hubs. Sebastien Wierinck uses them for two reasons. The first is purely pragmatic. This material is flexible, widespread, available in a variety of colors, and is very lightweight. Using plastic pipes combined with digital design and processing technology, Sebastien Wierinck comes up with new, unexpected solutions and creates furniture of the future, achieving striking results in a wide variety of colors and shapes.
However, this very reason for using plastic pipes would make Sebestyen a talented artisan, but by no means a designer. But there is also a second reason - a metaphorical one. These pipes are not just a material, not just a furniture surface. They are like the veins in our bodies. Their shape to one degree or another depends on that. What goes through them. In the case of pipes, this can be light, electricity, energy on the one hand, information and data on the other. This is the quirk of this brilliant designer - can information be transmitted through these gizmos? Some code that is transmitted through our bodies when we flop on this furniture! Indeed, at such moments, these bizarre sitting, in fact, are an extension of our bodies. Perhaps it is this strange idea of the interconnection of people, furniture and information that is one of the main driving factors of the On Site studio, in which Sebastien Wierinck now works.
Of course, Sebastien is not the only master of designer furniture. But if you remember a few interesting designers, mostly woodwork comes to mind. For example, furniture and all its secrets from Pablo Reynoso, which comes to life, as if in “Beauty and the Beast”. But there are probably not so many craftsmen for furniture made of unusual materials. Of course, if you remember the furniture you can really sit on.
Now all the activities of Sebastien Wierinck are focused on this website dedicated to the work of the On Site studio. On it you can see his work, look at furniture of the future, as well as check the schedule of his installations and, possibly, find an hour or two to visit it.
