"Lost in life" - what a terrible phrase! Usually she is associated with complete confusion and the inability to deal with their problems. Artist Rachel Perry Welty has the phrase “ lost in life ”Is used in a literal sense - the people in her photographs merge so much with the environment that you will not immediately see them.
Despite the title “Lost in Life,” Rachel Perry Welty's shots are not gloomy at all. Quite the opposite: For this project, Rachel used a lot of very bright objects, like morning breakfast boxes and colorful confetti. In some cases, she went the other way - for example, she wrapped everything in the picture, including a book of incredible size, which completely covers the person in the frame, in foil.
Meanwhile, it's not just Rachel Perry Welty who loves to apply camouflage in their projects. You can recall no less than three talented artists working in this direction: Cayetano Ferrer working on the streets of the city, who paints objects in such a way that it seems that you can look through them; the delightful project “The Disappearance of People in China” by Liu Bolin; and camouflage art by American Bev Dullittle, one of the finest US artists in the field.
Rachel Perry Welty was born in Tokyo in 1962. After moving to America, she graduated from Boston University of the Arts in 1999. What is the meaning of her project Lost in life ”? According to the artist herself, we do not pay attention at all to the ordinary everyday objects that surround us, and this is not about something that we pass by every day, but something completely invisible: a paper cup that was given to us by a coffee machine, for example, or the same box of cornflakes.
Such items are lost in our lives, but we are lost among thousands of such items. Rachel Perry Welty used them to create more than just photographs: it turned out to be a real multi-layered art installation, with hidden meaning and many details that at first glance cannot be discerned.
