On February 26 and 27, the auction house Sotheby's held an auction, where a large number of works of art created by the masters of Surrealism, Impressionism and Modernism were put up for sale. Information about the past event is available on the official website of the auction house. During these auctions, works by the famous artist Marc Chagall were sold. In total, from the sale of his paintings, it was possible to gain an amount of 6, 15 million pounds, which is 8, 2 million dollars.

Among the most expensive works of this artist is the painting with the title "The Artist at the Holiday", which was written by him in 1982. The specialists planned to sell this work at a price of 1 million pounds, but the auction was held with a significant excess of the estimated value. The painting was sold for 1.75 million pounds. A little more, to be more precise 1, 8 million pounds, managed to bail out from the sale of a painting called "Vase with Roses", which was painted by the artist in 1929. Painting "The Bride", painted in 1959, was sold for 915 thousand pounds.

At the last auction, the house of Sotheby's sold not only Chagall's canvases, which were painted in oil, but also the graphics of this artist, his gouache. A whole selection of lithographs with the title "Daphnis and Chloe" became a valuable lot. It was sold at a price of 735 thousand pounds. In the document that accompanied this lot, it was noted that such a series of lithographs was printed in 1961 in the amount of 60 copies. One of these copies was put up for sale at Sotheby's.

Daphnis and Chloe is a work of fiction, which is a series of images from a Greek novel created in the second century AD. This cycle of illustrations was created over four years by the order of the Greek publisher Eugene Therial, a Parisian publisher. To get the proper inspiration and fulfill a quality order, Chagall decided to spend time on the island of Lesvos. Before creating the cycle "Daphnis and Chloe", Chagall had already worked with Terial, then he worked on illustrations for the poem "Dead Souls", written by Nikolai Gogol.

In just two days of bidding, the auction house Sotheby's managed to gain 109.1 million pounds from the sale of lots. The most expensive piece of art was the "Palace of Rains". This painting was painted by Claude Monet in 1908 and sold for £ 27.5 million.
