A person can make artificial flowers, an artificial heart, and perhaps even artificial intelligence. But an attempt to create an artificial reef off the coast of Florida, made in 1972, ended in failures. It is this anti-example that is devoted to installing Eclipse from the artist Hannes Bend.

On the site Kulturologiya. RF we have already talked about the work of the artist Shayna Leib, who creates artificial corals from glass. But in 1972, in South Florida, it was decided to build a whole artificial coral reef, moreover, from old car tires.

This was done in the hope that the specified underwater structure will become a haven for marine flora and fauna: different species of fish, crustaceans, plants and the same corals will live there. I must say that by 1972, as a result of human activity, all these animals and vegetation began to leave the waters in the vicinity of Florida. So the authors of the project described above planned in this way to return all this natural diversity to its place. Tens of thousands of old tires were submerged in coastal waters.

Now, forty years later, it can already be stated that these good intentions have turned into an ecological disaster. Fish and plants did not settle again off the coast of South Florida, but, on the contrary, finally left these waters.

Under the influence of water, tires began to decompose, poisoning the water with rubber decomposition products. The storms destroyed the orderly rows of artificial reefs and stretched the poisoned elements along the bottom for kilometers! At the same time, the tires destroyed real corals that got in their way!

In order to illustrate this large-scale destructive human impact on nature, Hannes Bend just created the installation Eclipse (Eclipse). With the help of several divers, he lifted from the bottom a hundred car tires dropped there forty years ago and placed them in one of the halls of the Charest-Weinberg Gallery in Miami.

I must say that similar projects have failed in other parts of the world: Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, Africa, the Gulf of Mexico. Everywhere, an attempt to create artificial reefs using a variety of garbage and waste has led to environmental disasters!
