Huge paintings always delight the audience, because on such canvases every detail of the drawing is clearly visible. But it is much more difficult to create a masterpiece on a small canvas. For example, an Indian artist surprises users of social networks by showing his works made in the ancient technique of painting on fragile ficus leaves.
Indian artist Sandesh S. Rangnekar took over the art of drawing on leaves from his father, the famous Indian artist Sadashiv G. Rangnekar. When Sandesh was 10 years old, he sneaked into his father's workshop and watched him. If Sadashiv went away on business, the boy himself tried to draw something. When Sandesh first decided to show his father his work, he was impressed, because he did not suspect that his son could do that. After that, his father bought Sandesh paints and taught him some lessons in painting techniques.
Today Sandesh is one of the few artists in India who preserves the ancient art of painting on the leaves of the Bodhi tree (Sacred Ficus). Painting on a small piece of paper is really impressive. The master pays special attention to details, thanks to which a complete image appears.
To understand how laborious the work of Sandesh Rangnekar is, it is necessary to pay attention to the leaves, which are the canvas for images. Veins are clearly visible in them, which makes it difficult to draw the image.
These leaves are of particular importance to Buddhists. According to their beliefs, 2000 years ago, the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama, attained enlightenment sitting under the Bodhi tree. In ancient times, these leaves were used for writing until paper was invented.
Before you start drawing, you need to prepare the leaves. This takes 40 days. For this time, the leaves are dipped in water so that the top layer can be removed with your fingers or a brush.
As soon as the sheet is ready for further use, the artist picks up thin brushes and begins to create. One job takes him about two days. To save the drawing, special conditions are needed. It depends on how long the image will be pleasing to the eye. If the sheet is left just on the table, then dust will settle on it, and the image will disappear.
Another master Gida al-Nazar experimented a little with coffee and created coffee designs on the leaves.
