Today, there is no doubt that Paris is the capital of European fashion. And few people know about Rosa Bertin, whose elegant outfits were chased by the European aristocracy and even the inhabitants of Versailles. And her most important and beloved client, with whom she worked for 20 years, was Marie Antoinette herself. And thanks to the portraits of the queen, today you can see the magnificent creations of the famous milliner.
Her Majesty's milliner
Arriving in France in 1770 from Austria, Marie Antoinette did not hesitate to accept the customs of her new homeland, trying not to ignore all the fashion trends. Soon, the future queen was introduced to the young Rosa Bertin, by that time already a rather famous milliner, the owner of her own store, in which many influential ladies who shone in Versailles, including courtiers, dressed. The models presented by Rose liked the Queen.
Striving to become a role model, a standard of elegance, Marie Antoinette adored dressing up and changing outfits. She changed several times a day, and put on a new dress only once. She could discuss her wardrobe with passion for hours, on this basis she and Rosa quickly got along. Marie Antoinette sought to emphasize her attractiveness with outfits, and not at all her high status, which differed from her predecessors on the throne.
In a duet with Rosa Bertin, they did it perfectly. And soon Marie-Antoinette achieved what she was striving for - her toilets became a role model for all fashionistas in France, who meticulously followed them.
The fruit of the joint labor of Rosa and the French queen was the huge women's dresses. Rose invented them in connection with the complicated relationship between the queen and Louis XVI. The modified oval frame allowed the skirt to reach a width of 3 meters, and a woman in such an outfit looked much more majestic than a man in a court dress next to her.
When creating a complete image of a noble lady of that time, the hairstyle was very important. And since luxurious dresses with rich trimmings were in fashion, the hairstyles of those years were very high and complex. Rosa Bertin turned out to be also a great skill in creating hairstyles.
The scope for imagination was enormous, which Rose took advantage of. Together with the court hairdresser, Monsieur Leonard, they created something incredible on the heads of fashionistas. A whole genre scene from life could have appeared there, or even a warship (hairstyle "a la frigate").
But fashion does not stand still, and in 1780 Rosa dramatically changes her style. Instead of luxurious, heavy and bulky dresses, she creates a completely different - a simple, light dress of a delicate color, which does not restrict movement, but resembles a shirt in cut. By summer, such a dress made of white muslin, simple and at the same time refined, replenished the queen's wardrobe and she really liked it. The fashionable courtiers were also delighted. The new style, proposed by Rosa Bertin, entailed other dramatic changes, the towering hairstyles were replaced by whipped curls.
However, the people did not like the desire for simplicity at all, and the portrait of the queen, painted by the artist Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, in such a dress, which the people dubbed "the queen's shirt", caused a scandal. The queen appears in front of people in a bottom shirt. The artist had to urgently paint another portrait of the queen, but in a different dress, made of blue silk.
At the request of Marie Antoinette, Rosa Bertin began to create fashion dolls, which the Queen gave to her relatives. These dolls, called Pandora, in the latest fashions, were hugely popular. Since there were no fashion magazines then, new fashion trends were demonstrated with the help of these dolls. And fashion dolls Rosa Bertin successfully traveled across Europe.
However, during the French Revolution, she, like many other aristocrats, had to leave the country and move to London. And although there she continued to take orders, but, nevertheless, the time of Rosa Burter was over, a new era was alien to her. The famous milliner died at the age of 66.
Each time has its own trendsetters. But they are still relevant today style lessons from Raisa Gorbacheva - the first lady who was disliked by Soviet women.
