An artist named Dave gives a second life to old, secondhand landscapes, transforming them into surreal sci-fi scenes. Is this correct? Many of those who have seen Dave's work think it's just great. Godzilla by the old lighthouse and Chewbacca on the misty bank of a forest river? Why not. Both picturesque and modern. Fantasy fans are thrilled. True, it is not known how the authors of the landscapes themselves would have reacted to such a "remake" if they were shown the paintings in an updated form …

The vintage shop that Dave opened (it operates as an online store during the pandemic) specializes in everything from vinyl and home decor to clothing and jewelry, and these incredible paintings became his logical addition and calling card.

- When covid hit, I had to close my vintage store and bring it online. My wife and I launched a website and started working full time, trying to stay afloat. She made masks, and I started painting. Both that, and another very much interested us, and we were very glad that we have a job, - says the man.

Dave began his series of unusual paintings with an old landscape that he already had. The author himself considered him beautiful, but he could not sell this painting even for five dollars.

- After a couple of years, I decided that since I'm going to throw this landscape away anyway, why not try to do something interesting with it? I decided to add an AT-ST walker from Star Wars that fell into the lake and Ewoks fishing from it. And then off we go: pictures with fantasy characters became very popular, - says Dave.

As the man explains, he changes old, forgotten works of art, adding elements of pop culture to them. And he is sure that he does it with such dedication and with such respect for the style of the authors that they would surely appreciate his efforts.

The bottom line is amazing: when you look at the canvases, which include Godzilla, Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and other characters, recognizable or invented by Dave, it seems that this was intended. Fantasy heroes in landscapes do not look like something foreign, but quite organic.

Before starting to work with this or that old picture, Dave studies it for a very long time, analyzes what he saw, and then learns to "match" the author's style. And only after that he begins to paint his heroes from the future on the landscape. It is important to get into the mood clearly and make sure that the style of his characters does not stand out from the general composition.

Before the pandemic, Dave bought old landscapes from thrift stores and garage sales. But even now, when many such shops are closed due to restrictive measures, this is also not a problem - recently he has become so famous that people themselves bring him old paintings, which they want to get rid of during the cleaning or renovation of their houses.

Dave says it's great.

“I usually pay them only $ 5 or $ 10 for a landscape. This is not so much, considering that after my revision, the paintings are already much more expensive, '' he explains.

One can argue for a long time about whether it is right to do this with author's paintings. Meanwhile, creative people all over the world decide on more and more new experiments. For example, one graphic artist using artificial intelligence "Revived" the heroes of famous paintings, cartoons and presidents from banknotes.
