Initially, it was assumed that the main roles in this film would be played by other actors: Armen Dzhigarkhanyan was offered to play the leader of the expedition Ilyin, Evgeny Leonov - the servant of Ignatius, Igor Ledogorov - the convict Gubin, and Vladimir Vysotsky - the adventurer Krestovsky. However, almost all of these actors were engaged in other projects and did not even come to audition. Only Vysotsky caught fire with this idea, who specially for "Sannikov Land" recorded 3 songs: "White Silence", "Choosy Horses" and "Ballad of the Abandoned Ship". But before filming began, the management of "Mosfilm" removed from the role of Vysotsky without explaining the reasons. As a result, Oleg Dal played Krestovsky, and Yuri Nazarov, Georgy Vitsin and Vladislav Dvorzhetsky became his partners on the set.
