Fearless cowboys of Japanese appearance, who rush on their horses across the snow-covered expanses, can be seen only in the paintings of Tomokazu Matsuyama. A Japanese artist based in the United States, he creates picturesque spaces where old tales and legends are intertwined with a modern vision of the world.
Tomokazu Matsuyama was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and when he was only ten years old, he moved to the United States without speaking a word of English. The artist's works are a reflection of his upbringing. Matsuyama's paintings are traditional Japanese imagery, infused with American pop art and extravagant pop culture, creating a unique and beautiful hybrid. It is the bicultural heritage, the borrowing of Japanese and American national elements, that makes Tomokazu Matsuyama's paintings intriguing and unique in terms of cultural research.
Tomokazu Matsuyama lives and works in New York. As a contemporary artist, Matsuyama presents his work in various shows and exhibitions in galleries in Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Vancouver.
